Saint John Regional Hospital

The Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation (AHSC) is the largest multi-facility, accredited hospital corporation in New Brunswick, Canada, comprised of 12 hospital and health centres, serving a regional population of 200,000. A wide range of basic through to tertiary level health care services are delivered by a dedicated staff of 4,300 employees and 333 physicians. AHSC is a designated campus of the Faculty of Medicine, Dalhousie University and has an active Research Services Division.

The Saint John Regional Hospital (SJRH), one of Canada’s most modern and progressive hospitals, is the flagship of the highly integrated network that is the Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation. Their staff takes pride in providing leadership to the Region and the Province of New Brunswick through their active involvement in teaching, research and patient care in secondary and highly specialized tertiary services.

SJRH is a major affiliate of Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, hosting more than 160 Royal College and Family Medicine residents and 75 undergraduate trainees who participate in core, selective and elective rotations at the Saint John Regional Hospital each year. An average of 50 undergraduate and post graduate trainees are on site within the corporation at any time. Residency training is provided within the Departments of Anesthesiology, Diagnostic Radiology, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, Internal Medicine, Neurosurgery, Obstetrics/Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Pathology, Plastic Surgery, Psychiatry, Radiation Oncology, Orthopaedic Surgery, General Surgery and Urology. Elective undergraduate and postgraduate rotations are also provided in Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology, and Dermatology. Having Medical trainees on-site contributes to the promotion of quality patient care and assures continuing education of staff. It also presents the opportunity to introduce young medical professionals to our community and showcase the benefits of building a career here. The hospital is home to the New Brunswick Heart Centre, and is a recognized leader in Neurosciences, Oncology, Plastic Surgery, Paediatrics, Diagnostic Imaging, Emergency Medicine and Pre-hospital care.

With a total of 596 beds, the Saint John Regional Hospital is the region’s primary centre for acute care, and is Atlantic Canada’s only accredited tertiary trauma centre. SJRH houses a nucleus of expertise in Cardiac Surgery, Cardiology services, Neuroscience, Paediatric and Adult Oncology and many other specialties. The hospital is home to the New Brunswick Heart Centre, and is a recognized leader in Neuroscience, Oncology, Plastic Surgery, Paediatrics, Diagnostic Imaging, Emergency Medicine and Pre-hospital care. Twenty-four hour care in 23 areas of specialty and sub-specialty medicine and surgery is supported by a vast array of research, teaching, health promotion activities and partnerships with Dalhousie University, Memorial University, the New Brunswick Community College and the University of New Brunswick.

The Hospital offers the full range of in-patient, out-patient and emergency services normally found in community hospitals. This includes the usual medical, surgical, obstetrical, paediatirc and family practice medical specialties; with related nursing, para-professional, technical and support facilities.
